SCHOLARSHIPS SUPPORT LOCAL STUDENTS PURSUING CAREERS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND NURSING

Two James Sprunt Community College students have been awarded $5,000 People Helping People Scholarships from the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation.

Angelina Nease and Kentasia Morrisey were selected as this year’s JSCC recipients of the scholarship, which provides financial assistance to students attending each of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges. Each recipient receives $5,000 distributed over four semesters in payments of $1,250.

“A scholarship this substantial is incredibly helpful as I pursue a career in nursing,” Nease said. “I appreciate the support of JSCC and SECU.”

“I feel this scholarship will help me achieve my dream of pursuing a career in early childhood education,” Morrisey said.

Both students also participated in TRIO, a group of federally funded programs designed to connect students with resources and opportunities that support academic achievement.

Kiesha Avant of the JSCC Financial Aid Office said the scholarships demonstrate the impact community partnerships can have in helping students continue their education.

“I would like to thank SECU for its partnership, generosity and shared commitment to student success,” Avant said.

In addition to its curriculum scholarships, the SECU Foundation also supports students through its Bridge to Career Program, which provides scholarships for students seeking state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials through Workforce Continuing Education programs.

“SECU is intentional about doing something helpful in every county,” said Kenny Barrett, vice president of SECU, during his presentation. “We are able to do this because of the support of our members.”

Through partnerships such as the one with SECU Foundation, James Sprunt Community College continues to connect students with resources that can help make their educational and career goals possible.
