PARENT SHERRI THIGPEN AFFIRMS JSCC’S WORK TO PROVIDE FREE CCP CLASSES FOR DUPLIN COUNTY STUDENTS
KENANSVILLE, NC, Wednesday, September 12, 2024: It’s no secret that James Sprunt Community College’s Career and College Promise (CCP) program is a tremendous advantage for participating Duplin County students. Qualified high school students are provided with structured opportunities to dually enroll in community college courses that will provide pathways that lead to a certificate, diploma, or degree. The networking options this program offers may lead to entry-level job opportunities. Not to mention, students attending Duplin County high schools have these opportunities for free!
The Thigpen family is one of many examples of success. Sherri Thigpen, the mother of two CCP participants, regularly praises JSCC for the experience that was afforded to her children. “The Thigpens are graduating! My daughter Taylor graduated from ECU in three years thanks to JSCC and all the classes she could take through CCP. My son, Eli, recently graduated from high school and has transitioned seamlessly to NCSU this fall. His goal is to finish his bachelor’s degree in two years.”
Thigpen explains that this opportunity is a massive advantage for parents. “Students are guaranteed college credit, whereas you are not with AP courses. AP courses require rigorous standardized testing. College courses also have a 5-point scale similar to AP courses, but do not last the entire year. In other words, your kids can take more of them.” For parents who are financially planning to send one or more children to college, the opportunity to shave years off their cost of college is a tremendous gift and a significant relief.
Thigpen felt that JSCC truly lived up to its tagline- Join Our Family. Build Your Future. “I had to plan their classes strategically and ensure they got the most credits for their allowed high school class schedule. The CCP college liaison was great to work with and was always willing to help map out their classes with me. Career Coaches are also great resources for parents to help students accomplish their educational goals efficiently and cost-effectively. Everyone at JSCC goes above and beyond to help your students succeed in whatever pathway or field they choose.”
Morgan Smith, a Duplin County native and the current liaison for CCP at JSCC, is deeply committed to giving back to the community. “I want to serve the students of Duplin County and help them achieve their goals. At JSCC, we are a community that supports each other, and we are here to help you succeed.”
