JAMES SPRUNT COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS PROUD TO CELEBRATE ITS FIRST GROUP OF ACCESS TO ACHIEVEMENT INTERNS

December 10, 2025

Access to Achievement is a state-funded IDD workforce training program that empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to pursue their education and career goals.

Access to Achievement Coordinator Jennifer Cotten was blown away by the success of the first cohort. Cotten works with students on JSCC’s campus to craft person-centered plans for success, navigate program options, and find the right fit for each student to reach their goals.

Cotten said,
“It’s been such a joy to watch our interns step into new experiences and gain confidence in their abilities. I’m so proud of them!”

Likewise, the Access to Achievement Internship Program was designed to provide students with IDD an opportunity to develop workplace skills in a supportive environment. The goal of this program is to empower students for career success and to build on-campus awareness of how to appreciate and relate to students with IDD.

Dr. Shakeena White of JSCC Student Services said,
“The A2A Internship Program serves as an incredible opportunity for students and employers alike. The experience gained empowers students with invaluable work skills while paving the way for their future careers.”

The first cohort for the 2025–2026 school year included eight students who served in the following areas across JSCC’s campus:

TRIO

JSCC Marketing

JSCC Latino Center

JSCC Barber School

JSCC Custodial Department

ECU Health Duplin Hospital

JSCC Pender High School

Through the internship program, students had the opportunity to shred confidential information for campus departments, apply problem-solving skills, mop and clean tables, learn new software such as Canva, and strengthen their communication skills.

Nancye Gaj, State Director for Access to Achievement, attended the ceremony and commended all participants for their hard work and dedication to the program.
