The Upward Bound program provided me with the opportunity to discover what steps I’m going to take in the future. I now know that I want to go to college, and they provided me with a free tour that helped me find a campus that feels like home. They made sure to check up on me to ensure everything was going as planned; they checked if I needed any help to ensure that my goals weren’t altered. They motivated me to believe that I could and would do whatever it took to reach for the stars and accomplish my dreams.
Angelo Ortiz-Oliva
The Upward Bound Program has done so many things for me. I remember joining the program during my sophomore year of high school. I was behind in all my work because of COVID and was struggling while also lacking social skills and personal skills because I would be home all day.
When I joined the program, it helped me improve all of my skills even the ones that I didn’t know of. They also helped me with my class and I began to do a lot of fun activities like the gift card raffle or the trip we had to New York. Even if it was virtual it was still fun and the food they were able to provide us was fantastic. During my junior year, I had my first experience in person and I enjoyed it because I was able to speak to other students. I was also able to catch up with any missing work and got the help I needed.
I haven’t been able to do a lot during my senior year due to work but I have been getting help from the James Sprunt UB staff with my college applications and FAFSA and I’m grateful for all the help I’ve been given by everyone.
Genesis Espinoza Sevilla
I started Upward Bound during my freshman year of high school and I can say that I love the teachers, peers, environment, love, and respect that I have received when attending events or classes. Upward Bound has great college advisors who have guided me on my journey throughout high school and genuinely want to assist me with everything I need help with. My favorite thing about Upward Bound is that even if you go in not knowing anyone you always come out with a new friend, a good life lesson, or a good experience to talk about to your friends and family. The college advisors showed us around universities and how we can apply ourselves to become successful. I can honestly say that I will miss Upward Bound because of how much I grew from freshman year until now but also because the teachers treat us like adults, trust us, love us, and want the best for us. I will recommend joining the Upward Bound Program to any future freshmen I know who are looking to succeed and receive genuine teachers, friends, and experiences.
Katherine Mendoza
Upward Bound was fun! Waking up early for Saturday meetings wasn’t the best thing ever, but I persisted through. I had a lot of fun last year when we went to Charlotte for our spring trip. The help was appreciated and gave me a chance to get work done as well and stay caught up on my assignments. Overall, the program was great!

Eligble Students must meet the following requirements
- Current High School Freshman (9th), Sophomore (10th), or Junior (11th) with a minimum GPA of 2.5
- Demonstrates a need for academic support
- Must qualify as either a low-income or potential first-generation college student
- Must enroll in a post-secondary education program upon graduation from High School.
