Mrs. Mandy Jenkins (Media specialist and STEM teacher at Gardners Elementary School in Wilson, NC) and her third-grade students were able to learn about the hydroponic farm virtually! Mrs. Jenkins attended the AG Industry in Schools workshop this summer and toured the hydroponics farm. This experience inspired her to start a hydroponic farm at her school. She received a grant and will be having an indoor hydroponics farm in the library where her 3rd graders will be responsible for taking care of it. We are so excited to see where their hydroponics operation goes!

Returning to school isn’t easy, but for many adult learners, it’s a journey fueled by family, a passion for pursuing new opportunities and personal growth.
Students from local Community Colleges opened up about their motivations for returning to the classroom.
“My child was my biggest motivation. It’s time to start building for her and I want my child to know mommy did the best she can,” said Santressia Williams, a 30-year-old student at James Sprunt Community College.
With more than 1.3 million adults in North Carolina without a certification or degree, we must work together to create pathways for re-engagement and support for learners of all ages. Stay tuned as we share first-hand student stories and the keys to success on their journeys.

📢 JSCC will be celebrating Black History Month with a series of weekly facts honoring the impactful work of African Americans! ✊🏽
In 1960, a courageous group of African American students made history in Greensboro, North Carolina, by organizing a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter. Their bold act of protest sparked a wave of sit-ins across southern college towns, challenging the system of segregation head-on.
Despite facing arrests and abuse, these young leaders stood firm, demanding justice and equality. Their efforts didn’t just change local policies—they ignited a national movement, forcing public establishments to rethink discriminatory practices and laying the groundwork for a more inclusive society.
Today, we honor their legacy, remembering how their bravery paved the way for change in North Carolina and beyond. 🌍💪🏾
