EVENT BRINGS FIREFIGHTERS TOGETHER FOR TRAINING, FELLOWSHIP, AND GROWTH
James Sprunt Community College has long been committed to serving its community through high-quality, individualized education that prepares students for meaningful careers. At JSCC, faculty and staff are dedicated to ensuring that learning in the classroom translates seamlessly into real-world workforce readiness.
Cody Herring, EMS Clinical and Fire Coordinator/Instructor, plays a key role in strengthening relationships with local fire departments. With firsthand experience in Public Safety, Herring brings a deep passion for student success and a strong commitment to ensuring fire chiefs across the service area know JSCC stands ready to support their departments with highly trained, qualified individuals.
Recently, JSCC hosted the Fire Expo on campus. Nearly every fire department in Duplin County was represented, with participants traveling from as far as High Point, NC, and Virginia to take part in the weekend-long event.
The Fire Expo brought firefighters together from across the region, creating an invaluable opportunity for hands-on training, professional growth, fellowship, and camaraderie. The event plays a vital role in supporting the continued development of fire service professionals, especially in rural communities that rely heavily on dedicated volunteer firefighters. Their selfless commitment to protecting their neighbors is essential to the safety and strength of the region.
Courses offered during the Expo included Basic Firefighting, Fire Investigation 101, Flashover Simulation, Electric Vehicles, ASERT–LZ Operations, NIMS–ICS–300, Mental Health Resilience Officer, and Rural Pumps.
Vendors supporting the event included Code 3 Insurance, Rhinehart, C.W. Williams, and Ricochet Leatherworks, with catering provided by Ezzell’s. Their support helped make the event a success and underscored the strong partnerships that continue to elevate fire training at James Sprunt Community College.
Herring said, “We are grateful to everyone who contributed to such a successful weekend, and already looking forward to making 2027 even bigger and better. We have an outstanding team that makes this possible!”
