JSCC CELEBRATES THE START OF “SEEDS OF TOMORROW” SCHOLARSHIP

James Sprunt Community College (JSCC) continues its longstanding commitment to meeting the community’s educational and workforce development needs through accessibility, innovative teaching, and strong partnerships. The launch of the Semillas del Mañana (Seeds of Tomorrow) Scholarship marks a new step in this mission to help students overcome financial barriers that may hinder their educational goals.

The Semillas del Mañana Scholarship is a collaborative effort led by Flor Juarez Diaz, Director of the Latino Center at JSCC, in partnership with The Association for Latinos in Duplin County, Marine Federal Credit Union, Angelica Santibañez, and Gloria Borja. This community-driven initiative was born from a shared desire to help students succeed despite the rising costs of education and certification programs.

Scholarship funds may be used to cover tuition, textbooks, program fees, and required state or certification exams for students who either do not qualify for financial aid or whose aid does not fully meet their needs.

Founders of the scholarship stated,

“Semillas del Mañana represents an investment in our students and in the future of Duplin County. By removing financial barriers, we are creating pathways for education, economic stability, and community growth.”

While there is no GPA requirement, eligible students must demonstrate a strong commitment to their academic success and be enrolled in a curriculum or continuing education program designed to prepare them for university transfer, workforce entry, or business ownership leading to a sustainable living wage. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must complete at least 10 hours of volunteer service with a nonprofit organization in Duplin County.

Flor Juarez Diaz, Director of the Latino Center at JSCC, shared her gratitude for the community’s support:

“I am incredibly humbled and grateful that this group, many of whom are my friends, neighbors, and individuals I deeply admire, not only chose to contribute financially, but also committed their time to support future fundraising efforts to grow the endowment’s principal. Semillas del Mañana (Seeds of Tomorrow) represents a seed of hope, planted with generosity, love for our community, and nurtured by a shared commitment to a brighter future for generations to come.”

Through this initiative, James Sprunt Community College reaffirms its dedication to empowering students, strengthening the local workforce, and cultivating a spirit of collaboration that benefits the entire community.

Dr. Hair, President of JSCC, states,

“The Seeds of Tomorrow Scholarship is another wonderful example of how James Sprunt Community College, in partnership with local donors, helps support college affordability on our campus, where our students can focus on their academic achievement and their professional potential without having the financial burden and worry of the costs of attending.”

While this scholarship is built upon a strong foundation of community generosity, James Sprunt Community College warmly invites friends and supporters of the College to join in continuing this legacy of giving. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps transform student futures and strengthen our shared community.
