TRiO Student Support Services

The Student Services Division is to design and implement support services and programs for students which enable them to meet their short-term and long-term educational or training goals.

What is TRiO Student Support Services (TRiO SSS)?

Student Support Services is a federally funded program that serves eligible students throughout the academic year. Our program consists of a Director, Program Counselor, Math Skills Advisor, Academic Advisor, and Administrative Assistant. By working in cooperation with all offices of JSCC, we provide the academic support necessary to help you stay in college and successfully meet your educational goals. TRiO SSS is located in the Strickland Center Annex on the JSCC campus.

Eligibility: Students eligible for Student Support Services must demonstrate an academic need and meet one of the following criteria:

1. Qualify as a first generation college students (neither parent has a four-year college degree)

2. Qualify as “low income” by meeting income limits set by the U.S. Department of Education

3. Qualify as a student with a disability (documentation required for medical or other)

Program Services include:

  • Tutoring
  • Academic, transfer, financial and personal counseling
  • Study skills assistance
  • Support groups
  • Workshops in: test-taking skills, career decision-making, stress management, time-management, financial aid, essay writing, note taking and study skills
  • Cultural events, including trips to places of cultural, historical interest, and campus visits.
  • Career exploration.

Transfer Counseling

The transfer process can be very confusing and time consuming. Some common concerns are:

  • What are my chances of transferring into a 4-year university?
  • What classes should I take to transfer to a 4-year university with an Associates Degree?
  • What are the benefits of getting my Associates Degree?
  • What are the benefits of transferring to a 4-year college?
  • What are my financial aid options?
  • What are my housing options?
  • When should I apply? How do I apply?

The Program Counselor’s goal is to help you navigate the transfer process as smoothly as possible, so please come by and schedule an appointment…the sooner the better!
Campus Tours answer questions about a university that you are interested in attending. The tour gives a more “real” understanding of the school, campus, etc. The visit works like this:

  • We take JSCC transportation to the campus of your choice.
  • Attend a campus tour that allows you to check out the university environment and lay out of the campus.
  • It is possible to set up appointments during the visit with the college of your choice to gain a better understanding of the program that you’re interested in.
  • A University admissions official may be available to answer questions you have regarding the application/transfer process.

Please contact the Program Counselor for more information on transferring to a 4-year university or college and campus tours:
