FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE GRADUATE, MADISON POGUE, TAKES ADVANTAGE OF RESOURCES AT JSCC
Madison Pogue is a shining example of student success and determination. A proud alumna of James Kenan High School, Pogue began her journey with James Sprunt Community College under the guidance of her high school counselors.
“My guidance counselors suggested that I start taking college classes in place of extracurriculars, so I started out taking Intro to Psychology and kept going from there!” said Pogue.
Even after enrolling at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Pogue continued to take courses through JSCC to save money and make the most of her time. “I took Pharmacy Technician and Phlebotomy courses at JSCC when I was on summer break, and also completed the work I began as a CCP student. Eventually, I obtained my Associate in General Education and my Associate in Arts,” she shared.
By the time Pogue graduated from UNC with a Bachelor’s in Psychology, she had already completed a significant portion of her coursework—thanks to the flexibility and opportunities available through JSCC.
Later, Pogue utilized JSCC’s testing center to take several nationally recognized exams, further advancing her education and career readiness. “What I valued most about my JSCC experience was how it prepared me for college while still being in high school and gave me the tools I needed to feel confident in my educational journey,” said Pogue.
Now, Pogue has been accepted into the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing’s Advanced Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program. Her goal is to complete the program and begin her nursing career in medical-surgical, psychiatric, or labor and delivery nursing.
“Thanks to JSCC, I was able to finish many of the college credits I needed before even being accepted into a university, while also allowing me the chance to become certified and start working in the medical field so early in my career! I will always be thankful to JSCC for giving me the head start to becoming the first in my family to attend and graduate from college!” said Pogue.
Madison’s journey is an inspiring reminder of what dedication, opportunity, and the right support can achieve. James Sprunt Community College is proud to have played a part in her success.
