Meet Vanessa — a devoted mother, student leader, and an inspiring example of strength and perseverance. 💪💙

What inspired her to return to school?
👉 “I’ve spent most of my life putting others first. It wasn’t until I lost my husband that I realized — as a single mother of two — it was time to take charge of my future.”

Most rewarding part of her journey at JSCC?
👉 “This journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve dealt with the loss of loved ones who once inspired me, balanced the demands of raising two children and their busy schedules, all while pushing through my own ongoing health challenges, but I stayed the course.”

Biggest source of support?
👉 “One of the most rewarding parts of my time at James Sprunt has been serving in Student Government — first as Secretary, and now as President — and having the honor of sitting on the Board of Trustees. These roles, along with the connections I’ve made, have empowered me to grow and reminded me just how strong I really am. Additionally, the instructors and staff at JSCC have been a true support system. I’m especially thankful for Mrs. Thigpen and Mrs. Tonda Clowney — your encouragement and belief in me, especially during the times I doubted myself, made all the difference.”

Future plans?
👉 “Looking ahead, I plan to return next year to complete my Office and Business Administration degree, then transfer to a university to pursue Accounting and Finance. I know this is just the beginning of my story.”

Congratulations, Vanessa! 🎉 Your strength and determination will surely take you far. 💙

What inspired her to return to school?
👉 “My biggest inspiration was my son. I wanted to set an example for him—that it’s okay to take time figuring out your path, and that it’s never too late to pursue your goals. Choosing to go back to school was a way to show him the importance of growth, persistence, and believing in yourself.”

Most rewarding part of her journey at JSCC?
👉 “The people I’ve met along the way. Whether it was someone I crossed paths with briefly or someone I built a real bond with—every connection added something meaningful to my journey.”

Biggest source of support?
👉 “Aside from my husband, one of my biggest sources of support has been Erin Thigpen. She’s been more than just an academic advisor—she’s been someone I could truly count on. Her guidance and encouragement meant more to me than I can put into words.”

Future plans?
👉 “I’m really interested in pursuing something in social work, but I’m also enjoying my current job. Right now, I’m just following God’s lead and trusting that the right path will unfold.”

Challenges she’s overcome?
👉 “Balancing life as a wife, friend, and parent while studying wasn’t easy. One of the biggest lessons I learned was the power of saying ‘no’ when I needed to. These challenges taught me resilience, time management, and the importance of setting boundaries. It hasn’t always been easy, but every step has made me stronger.”

👏 Let’s give it up for Shanequa and her incredible determination and heart! We’re proud of you! 💙

CCP Student at James Sprunt Community College

Please join us in celebrating Elier Marquez-Chavez, a remarkable high school student who has been accepted into Yale, Stanford, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, and several other prestigious universities — earning over $4 million in scholarships! 🌟📚

What inspired you to pursue your program at JSCC?
👉 “I chose to pursue my program at JSCC because I was eager to challenge myself academically while exploring a diverse range of disciplines. Engaging in coursework that spanned from sociology to business not only broadened my intellectual horizons but also played a pivotal role in helping me clarify my core values and envision the type of career I aspire to pursue.”

What challenges have you overcome on your educational journey?
👉 “One of the most significant challenges I encountered was learning to balance my time effectively. Juggling academic responsibilities, work commitments, and leadership roles in extracurriculars was overwhelming at first. But through self-discipline, I developed strong time-management skills that helped me excel—and will continue to benefit me in the future.”

What has been the most rewarding part of your time at JSCC?
👉 “The semester I took seven college-level courses alongside my high school classes and earned straight As was the most rewarding. That semester pushed me to my limits and revealed the depth of my potential. It’s a moment I’ll always reflect on when facing challenges ahead.”

Who or what has been your biggest source of support?
👉 “My greatest source of support has always been my parents. They never made me feel like I was doing too much—instead, they encouraged me to go beyond what I thought was possible. Their unwavering belief in me, and their tireless work as educators and farmers, continues to inspire me to approach every task with dedication and humility.”

What are your future plans after graduation?
👉 “After graduating from JSCC and high school, I plan to major in History. My goal is to attend a top law school and pursue a career in immigration law. As a rural student from Duplin County, I hope to use my legal education to advocate for underserved communities like mine and ensure justice is accessible to all—regardless of legal status.”

👏 Let’s give a huge round of applause to Elier for his outstanding achievements, leadership, and future impact! We can’t wait to see all that you’ll accomplish. 💙
