FACULTY AND STAFF OF JSCC WORK TOGETHER TO PROVIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE VALUE OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Twice a year, Ashley Graham, School-Age Education Instructor, and Kris’T Sloan, Early Childhood Instructor, along with several other JSCC staff members, work to raise Duplin County first graders’ awareness of the value of community college. Faculty and staff of JSCC understand that while Crayons on Campus is a fun day for students and teachers alike, Crayons on Campus has a much more significant purpose.
Since 2011, JSCC has collaborated with Duplin County Schools, providing an annual trip to JSCC during the students’ 1st-grade year. JSCC Presidential Scholars and staff/faculty volunteers work together to provide 1st graders with a walk-through of the main campus. Students visit classrooms and learn about a variety of careers they could pursue by attending James Sprunt Community College, and participate in several hands-on activities with instructors.
Dr. Shannon Hair, President of James Sprunt Community College, said,
“Thank you to Duplin County Schools for sharing your ‘future Spartans’ with us for two days. This partnership further demonstrates the importance of every child in Duplin County having access to higher education, regardless of age or size. Duplin County Schools’ students will always be welcome on our campus at James Sprunt Community College.”
Participating schools for this spring were as follows:
Warsaw Elementary
Wallace Elementary
Rose Hill Magnolia
Chinquapin Elementary
Graham shares,
“The mission of this program is to plant the seed that community college is a great place to start after high school! This event is always a tremendous success. We love seeing the excitement in the young students’ eyes.”
We look forward to our next group in the fall!
